The Jewish New Year of the trees, Tu B’Shvat (pronounced Too BishVAHT), falls on Monday, February 2 this year. According to the Talmud, the 15th of the Hebrew month of Shvat is designated as the end of the period in which most of Israel’s yearly rain has fallen. This marks the time when trees have used up water from the previous year’s rainfall and have begun absorbing the water of the New Year. On Tu B’Shvat we honor the cycle of the trees, we sanctify the power of nature through our Tu B’Shvat Seder.
