Sunday Morning Adult Ed

Sunday, January 26, 2025 26 Tevet 5785

10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

All Hakafa adults are invited to join us either in-person or via Zoom for Sunday Morning Adult Education. Come early for a cup of coffee and to schmooze.

On this Sunday, Rabbi Michael Davis will join us to present “When Jews were Arabs - A Thousand Year-Old Love Story.” In the space of a few decades some 1,000 years ago over a distance of some 4,000 miles, the Jews embraced Arabic. Thus began a love affair between Jews and Arabic that extended five centuries and more with a lasting impact on Jewish life to this day. The story involves palace intrigue, international travel, the rediscovery of an ancient miracle cure and the regeneration of an entire language, Hebrew. We hope you will join us!

Rabbi Michael Davis served Reform congregations in Highland Park and Chicago for over 15 years as an ordained cantor. He was a professor at the Hebrew Seminary in Skokie for 13 years training the next generation of rabbis. During the pandemic, Rabbi Davis began an intensive study of Arabic language, recently completing the leading academic curriculum of Georgetown University. He teaches "Introduction to Arabic as a Jewish Language" through his Rava Chicago institute. Rabbi Davis was born in the UK, grew up in Israel, moving to the US in 1998. He became a US citizen just in time to vote in the 2008 elections.
