Sunday Morning Adult Ed

Sunday, March 16, 2025 16 Adar 5785

10:30 AM - 12:00 PM

All Hakafa adults are invited to join us either in-person or via Zoom for Sunday Morning Adult Education. Come early for a cup of coffee and to schmooze.

On this Sunday, Lois Barr will join us to present “Jewish Memories that Sustain Us." The taste of sweet wine, being held aloft in a chair at a simchah, the Sabbath afternoon nap, or finding the afikomen, certain memories take us back to the joy of Jewish ritual. We’ll read a few short works as models, then Lois will provide prompts to form your Jewish memories into brief stories. We hope you will join us!

An emerita professor of Spanish at Lake Forest College, Lois Baer Barr has long been interested in Jewish culture and memory. She co-produced a documentary, "Isa Kremer: The People’s Diva," that was shown at Jewish film festivals around the world and on tv stations around the country. Her collaborative work with the Artists Beit Midrash at NS Beth El explored Jewish scripture through creative writing. Lois’s recent novel, THE TAILOR’S DAUGHTER, recounts her mother’s life growing up over the tailor shop of her Eastern European Jewish parents in Louisville, Kentucky. Barr’s fiction and poetry has been nominated three times for the Pushcart Prize and her chapbook of poetry BIOPOESIS won first prize and was published at POETICA. Lois leads writing workshops around the Chicago area.
