Hakafa Welcomes Refugee Families!
In 2015, Hakafa decided to help one refugee family. The first family we helped, the Musas, arrived in January 2016. Since that time, Hakafa has helped close to 20 families - from the Congo, Eritrea, Afghanistan, Belarus, Cameroon, and Syria - adjust to life in the United States. Approximately 50 congregants have become friends, family, teachers, and guides to these families. We have helped them practice their English, learn how to ride the trains, shop for groceries, write checks, and understand the world around them; we have introduced them to pizza, jazz, July 4th parades, and our favorite children's books. Our congregation has also provided monetary support for rent assistance, food, and winter gear.
If you are interested in becoming involved with our refugee program, please contact Hakafa members, Allison Stein or Bob Turner.
Click here to watch a video about how communities across the United States welcome refugees. The video features a number of Hakafa members and was made by the Refugee Council USA.
